A Legacy of Sacred CraftHIWADAYA
Keepers of a Sacred Craft Since 1830.
Since 1830, Hiwadaya has been the trusted guardian of Japan’s most important cultural properties.
We are a family of artisans, and our leader is the only Hiwadabuki master in Yamaguchi.
We are dedicated to passing on this sacred trust.
The Art of Hiwadabuki
Hiwadabuki is a traditional Japanese roofing art, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This ancient technique is unique to Japan, using only the bark of the hinoki cypress, fastened with bamboo nails.
Since the Heian period, it has been the most revered method, reserved for the most sacred and imperial structures, such as the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Itsukushima Shrine.
A National Treasure –
Ruriko-ji Temple
Ruriko-ji Temple in Yamaguchi is a designated National Treasure.
It is widely celebrated as one of Japan’s three most beautiful pagodas.
Its stunning, sweeping roof is a true masterpiece of the Hiwadabuki technique.
Hiwadaya is proud to be the guardian of this priceless icon, having recently completed its first major reroofing in 70 years.
This is the living heart of the tradition we preserve.
